Do you think mixed-use development will work on Wrightsville Beach? What type of stores would you like to see by Johnnie Mercer's Pier?

Mixed use can work if there is a relief given to the stringent parking requirements for retail uses. There also should be some height relief (LIMITED!!) to allow only one more story and ONLY in the retail district of Johnny Mercer Pier (Salisbury Street) and Lumina in the area between Stone and Columbia. In return, the development should provide more greenspace and be subjected to more architectural control. Absolutely NO subgrade parking should be allowed.
Uses that would be cool and cohesive with Wrightsille Beach should include: ice cream, another Trolley Stop, wine shop, coffee shop, souvenier/gift shop, beach supplies/rental, bike rental, Kinkos type office support facility, in short, anything that would provide a convenience to tourists and residents that would keep them from needing to hop in their car!
Granted, we all enjoy this wonderful experiment called capitalism, but does everything have to be about “the money?” How about a little more foresight, commonsense and less greed. Let's not destroy the place.
I agree! Being able to ride my bike to get a bagel in the morning or some coffee would be so wonderful! I believe it would enhance the character of the town to be able to offer these options for residents and visitors. Such amenities could include breakfast/coffee house (Port City Java), Jersey Mike's/lunch spot, Bike Rental, Ice Cream, quaint gift shops. This could be a wonderful addition to our town.
You can ride your bike and get your coffee today and for the past 3 years at Cafe Del Mar next to Sweetwater . You must not be here very often not to know this.
I can't tell you how opposed I am to the Oceanview Resort proposal (reported Jan 18 issue). Another condo development with only 3.5% commercial space is not "mixed use." What it is, is an attempt to further destroy the basic nature of WB for a few bucks in the developer's pocket.
