Surf Zones

The Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen heard a proposal last week to revamp the surf zones. The new setup would allow swimming in all areas of the beach and would allow surfing in all areas outside of a 200 yard buffer zone around lifeguard stands.
What do you think of this proposal? Do you think it would work on Wrightsville Beach?

Yes I do. Surfers are generally respectful of swimmers and have saved lives. A certain number of them should be allowed anywhere they want, but no one should be allowed to lay surf boards on the beach to rent to unsupervised novices. That's when surfing on this small beach becomes a problem.

I don't get it - why have a surf zone and then allow swimmers the option of swimming in the surf zone?

Plus, the lifeguards dont do a good job of enforcing the surf zones. they are real quick to blow their whistle at surfers who are in the swim zones but they don't do anything about all the people in the surf zones. Seems the surf zone idea is only enforced for the swimmers.

Plus, like last summer, there were only 2 surf zones for the entire island. I think there should be an even number of swim zones as there are surf zones.

I would be curious to know what other beaches are doing about this problem. How are they handling the surf/swimming issues? What sort of resolutions have they come up with and are they effective?

I agree, surfers help bad swimmers in emergencies. Life guards always blow that whistle at a surfer but never at a stupid tourist that gets in the way of everyone. if its a surf zone, they need to get the people out of the water and allow for just surfers. same as they do within the 200 ft pole. as far as the one comment for not wanting surfers in her area of view to her house. MOVE! its a beach and surfers bring the natural beauty to the ocean. whats nasty is all the college students and marines smoking and drinking on the beach. making a mess!!!
